Espressohotel Milano Linate: A Hotel Library with Mondadori

During my work at Espressohotel Milano Linate, I arranged a collaboration with Mondadori to provide guests with a reading and book-discovery area. Newly published books were available to browse, read during a stay or purchase. This example from my professional photographic archive shows how a cultural partnership could enrich the guest experience and give the hotel a distinctive identity. The account of my involvement is based on my personal recollections; contractual details are not published.

Espressohotel Milano Linate: an opening in August 2014

Espressohotel Milano Linate opened on 1 August 2014, close to Milan Linate Airport. The hotel was presented to the Italian travel trade as a new kind of social hotel: accommodation that could encourage travelers to meet, share interests and make use of welcoming communal spaces without sacrificing individual privacy. Contemporary reporting in Mixer Planet (24 July 2014) describes its launch, its modern guest rooms and the social concept. An October 2014 report from Travel Quotidiano places the opening on 1 August.

What ‘Be Social’ meant beyond a marketing slogan

The original hotel concept went beyond naming common areas. It brought together an integrated reception and bar, places to meet, guest-facing digital tools and activities to make conversations possible. Press accounts described the EspressoPad tablet and the ‘Espressamente’ digital system, designed to connect guests interested in sharing experiences. The development-and-standards document preserved in my archive, dated November 2015, explores the idea in greater operational detail; it is a later document, not proof that every service existed on opening day.

My role in the opening and day-to-day hotel management

My involvement in Espressohotel Milano Linate belongs to the years in which I worked on hotel openings, service implementation and commercial development in Italy. This is a chapter about turning a design and brand concept into a functioning hotel: preparing the arrival experience, coordinating reception and food-and-beverage operations, setting service standards and working with the people who would welcome the first guests. I remember the close relationship between the reception and bar as especially important: it brought operational practicality together with the informal spirit of a social hotel. These descriptions of my responsibilities are my professional recollections, supported by operational documents in my archive; they are not a claim to have founded or owned the brand.

A library inside the hotel: the Mondadori collaboration

One initiative that I recall with particular satisfaction was negotiating a collaboration with Mondadori to give the hotel an area devoted to books and cultural discovery. The intention was practical and inviting: guests could explore editorial novelties, read during their stay and purchase books that attracted their interest. Rather than a decorative bookshelf, the proposal gave a common space an additional purpose and offered a moment of discovery between a flight, a meeting and an evening in Milan.

I negotiated this initiative with Giovanni Valitutto, whom I remember as my professional counterpart at Mondadori and who remains a good friend. Our collaboration is an example of the human relationships behind a hotel project: a commercial conversation can create a useful service for guests while establishing a lasting professional friendship. My identification of Giovanni’s role in this project and the details of our negotiation come from my firsthand testimony. The archive photograph documents the existence of the reading and book area; it does not, by itself, establish the terms of any agreement.

Why books belonged in a hotel designed to connect people

Reading is usually thought of as an individual activity. In the Espressohotel concept it could also become a starting point for conversation: a book discovered near reception, an interesting title discussed over coffee, or a visitor who finds a small piece of Italian culture before setting off for the city. This fit the broader Be Social positioning because it extended hospitality beyond the physical room and invited guests to make their own use of shared space.

The people and photographs behind the project

My archive preserves several authentic images from Espressohotel Milano Linate: the hotel team, the reception-bar and the book area associated with the Mondadori collaboration. These photographs capture the practical, lived environment of the property. I have chosen the original Mondadori library image for this article rather than an unrelated hotel façade or a generic stock photograph. As with all the historical chapters of Memories of a General Manager — Achievements and Passions, personal testimony is distinguished from documentary verification.
